What to Buy

Among the best buys the island has to offer are Batik - crafted by the island's numerous artists into T-shirts, dresses, wall hangings, and bed covers - beachwear and easily-affordable made-to-measure cotton, linen and silk clothing - courtesy of the island's many tailors and inspired by the natural surroundings, the sea and marine life.

Thalang Road, in Phuket Town, is home to many cloth merchants, offering excellent deals on a wide selection of cloth, which the island's tailors will be happy to convert into the fashion statement of the customer's choosing.

Besides the batik there’s a variety of other things worth consider to buy:

Thai, Chinese, Burmese and Khmer antiques are excellent buys. There is an export ban on certain pieces, particularly Buddha images. Other pieces may require an export license, but any reputable dealer will be able to advise on restrictions and any necessary documentation.

Bird's nests
Phukets famous high-quality birds nests are popular souvenirs among Asian tourists.

Both traditional and contemporary styles of pottery are available throughout the Island. Best known are the distinctive sea-green celadons from the Sukothai area, and the central provinces' colourful Benjarong (five color) porcelain, which are unique to the country. Most shops are located along Wichitsongkram Road.

The Thai’s are of the world's leading manufacturers of ready-to-wear clothing. Fashion boutiques are found in every shopping mall, while cheaper clothing such as T-shirts and jeans are available at bargain prices from street vendors. Custom tailoring is also very affordable and tailors can produce or copy most styles in just a few days.

Gems and Jewelry
Rubies and sapphires are the most popular, best-buy items. There are a wide range of jewelry shops found mainly in Phuket City and at Patong Beach.

Seashell products rank among top-five most purchased souvenirs. They are made into ornaments and gift items including necklaces, rings, bracelets, brooches, mobiles, lampshades, photo frames, etc.
